Nadine Chandrawinata was born May 8, 1986 in Hannover, Germany is the current Miss Indonesia, and currently represents Indonesia for the third time (1996, 2005, 2006) in the Miss Universe 2006 pageant. Her mother is German and her father is Indonesian Chinese. She has two siblings, twins Marcel and Mischa, who are models and actors. She measures 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) in height and 114 lb (52 kg) in weight.
Her English is limited, which was made obvious in an interview during the Miss Universe 2006 pageant. She used a translator in a following question and answer session. According to Miss Universe 2006 interview, she said that "Indonesia is a beautiful city".
Although she was born in Hannover and is of German descent, she moved to Jakarta in Indonesia when she was only 3 years old, which explains her limited German. Currently, she studies at the London School of Public Relations in Jakarta.
Her ethnicity is a part of critics. Her being chosen as Miss Indonesia 2006 deemed being false choice, because in the international view she isn't a pure Indonesian, but more a foreigner (of German descent) with Indonesian nationality with fair skin and hardly a 100 percent Indonesian. Many regretted the choice and Indonesian people feel discriminated by not able to competed in the International pageant.
In July 19th 2006, Nadine was charged by the Indonesian Law for her involvement in Miss Universe 2006 pageant. She is charged for breaking the code of law number 281 Culture and Educational decree 02/U/1984. Indonesian law forbid any kind of Miss pageants. She is one of the people who are being charged for the misdemeanor, including Miss Indonesia 2004 Artika Sari Devi.
She had a supporting role in an Indonesian movie in 2006: Realita, Cinta dan Rock'n Roll (Reality, Love, and Rock'N Roll).
